CBD & Skin: A Match Made in Heaven
by Erica Garza
Thanks to CBD, there’s no need to go searching for the elusive fountain of youth anymore or immediately turn to harsh chemical treatments to relieve skin conditions like psoriasis, eczema or acne. In addition to its highly researched anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving qualities, studies suggest that CBD may also positively affect your skin in a number of ways. Whether you struggle with dry skin patches, oiliness, acne, rosacea or fine lines, CBD skin care can help alleviate these issues while even reducing pain through transdermal absorption.
It’s no wonder, then, why so many cosmetic lines are finding ways to incorporate CBD into their products. So, if you’re on the hunt for healthier, younger-looking skin, here are some CBD benefits you should know about.
Soothes Dry Skin and Eczema Flare-Ups
If you suffer from eczema flare-ups, psoriasis or the occasional dry skin patch, research shows that CBD may help. According to the National Eczema Association, the soothing quality of CBD results from cannabinoids’ “powerful anti-itch effect” as well as anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Some studies even show that topical CBD may work more efficiently than oral CBD because receptors in the skin can interact with cannabinoids to reduce the symptoms and appearance of atopic dermatitis.
Reduces Puffiness and Swelling
Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, CBD also relieves puffiness and swelling, whether caused by a lack of sleep or the natural aging process. Simply dab CBD under the eyes to reduce dark circles or puffiness and to achieve a more youthful appearance. Taking CBD has also been linked to getting better sleep, which can prevent those dark circles from forming in the first place.
Moisturizes Skin and Decreases Fine Lines
According to Jeanette Jacknin, a board-certified dermatologist specializing in topical cannabinoids in skin care, studies have shown that CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system to help the skin look “more radiant and youthful.” In addition to moisturizing and soothing skin, CBD may also reduce fine lines and wrinkles.
Clears Up Acne
While cystic acne benefits from the anti-inflammatory qualities of CBD, as well, the non-psychoactive part of the cannabis plant can also prevent future breakouts. By decreasing oil and regulating stress, your acne may have met its match.
Relieves Redness Associated with Rosacea
If you suffer from rosacea — a chronic, inflammatory skin condition that leads to redness, stinging and swelling — CBD may help. Its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant qualities can reduce redness, swelling and pain as well as potentially prevent future flare-ups.
Provides Pain Relief
The benefits of CBD and using CBD massage oil can travel even deeper past the skin’s surface to relieve pain. In a clinical trial of osteoarthritis patients receiving CBD transdermal gel, researchers found a “significant” reduction in pain and improved physical functioning with no negative side effects. By protecting our cells from oxidative damage, and relieving soreness and stiffness in muscles and joints, CBD may provide natural relief from pain and soreness.
Incorporating CBD massages into your daily wellness routine not only makes your body feel better, but it can also help you relieve stress (an effect you’ll see even more of if you recruit your partner to be your masseuse), which can take a daily toll on your skin and overall health over time.
